SRONGTSEN BHRIKUTI BOARDING HIGH SCHOOL

Introduction and peeping at the past and present

Teachers and administrative staff

The school was established on 5th March 1982 in a rented house. The number of students at the beginning was barely 100 or so, studying as day scholars with around 12 teaching and non-teaching staff. Three years later, the number of student rose dramatically and thus a need for a boarding facility became an utmost importance. With the approval of HMG (His Majesty's Government) of Nepal then, it was soon transformed into a full-fledged boarding school. Beginning 1988, the number of entrants further increased keeping the same trend year after year.

SCHOOL BUILDING PROJECT: In 1989, the present principal Ven. Jampa Phuntsok joined this school as the principal. With the growing number of students every year, the school realized that it was high time the school had its own school building. This would enable the school to provide better educational facilities to the students and would be able to accommodate more children. Keeping this in mind, the school office brought out school future projects with its own expenses. And these projects were sent out to various help associations and individuals requesting for the funding of the school building. The SOIR-IM (The Swedish Organization for Individual Relief) generously offered to fund the school building motivated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama's fervent hope and need for imparting education to the younger generation of Tibetans whom he considers to be the "future seeds of Tibet." Soon after the completion of school's classroom building, they also approved the funding of the school's dormitory building complete with furniture for both classrooms and the dormitories. The school then moved its classrooms to its new building in 1992 and hostel in 1994.

Kindergarten block

After well and proper maintenance of classrooms and hostel building again SOIR-IM approved funding for the school's staff quarters. In the year 1999, the school completed constructing the school office building incurring all the expenses by its own. And in the beginning of the year 2001, the school accomplished organizing separate Kindergarten building with financial aids from the European Union.

At present the school operates 1 course of study: School Leaving Certificate level (a program of study up to class 10. Results of SLC exams till date have been very satisfactory achieving cent percent results on most of the occasions and some students standing in Distinction division (securing more than 80%).

KG Class

The primary aim of the school is to preserve our rich and unique religious and cultural heritage and at the same time propagate them to maintain our entity and cohesiveness. It further aims to cultivate social virtues like decency, punctuality, discipline, cleanliness, mutual understanding, co-operation, patience etc. and thereby moulding our youth into not only responsible citizens of our country, but also of the planet we live in.

The school aims to impart quality education to our youngsters to enable them to walk shoulder to shoulder with other their counterparts. It also aims to provide excellent educational facilities to the poorest of the poor students whose parents are unable to pay a huge amount of money for school fees.

The number of student attending the school for current academic session is 730. Children study following subjects in our school, viz. English, Tibetan, Nepali, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Geography, History, Civics, Computer, Music & dances and Games & sports. With financial help and guidance from Club Tibet, Strasbourg, France, the school administration had been able to conduct French Language Class for some selected meritorious students for 14 years (1995 to 2009). For the said class the number of students had been between 50 to 65.

Dormitory Building

Today, the school is able to provide quality education to its students and at the same time provide satisfactory facilities to the children who are from very poor families. They study in modern ventilated and spacious classrooms, live in very comfortable school hostel having both hot and cold water facilities.

Regarding their studies, we have very hard working teachers and moreover we don't feel we lack any manual efforts to keep our students active inside classroom. But being a service oriented institution aiming to serve the poorer part of the community, financial scarcity is obvious because of which we lack teaching aid materials which are useful to felicitate the interest of the students. For instance, Most of our students find the Science subject not so interesting as we are unable to afford them practical classes very often due to expensive equipments that we can not afford. It's certain that there will be difference in the method of studying; observing and learning. We could also develop the level of our student's general knowledge and especially help to develop and inculcate the habit to read books by providing them reliable sources in the school library. Through this medium we can also achieve better results to uplift the educational standard of our kids for which, we feel financial incapability to meet the daily expenses to purchase several books and tools. Apart from this, they also study computer lessons in our 2 computer labs, which have 39 computers. Due to financial scarcity to meet the regular expenses for maintenance and to upgrade them, we are unable to provide enough computer practical class for our students though they can surf the Internet regarding their related lessons from their subjects like Science, Mathematics etc.
So far, around 400 poor students in our school are sponsored by Individuals and associations from various countries abroad and we still continue with the efforts to find more sponsors for the remaining poor and needy children whose numbers are increasing every year. Our school's criteria of providing sponsors to children are: -
Children recently arrived from Tibet, Orphan or semi-orphan children, Children from very poor families and from remote areas of Nepal, Meritorious, Divorced parents' children etc.

Our school also aims for the mental, spiritual and physical development of our students. Apart from the classroom imparting knowledge, we hold various co-curricular activities to enrich our students' mental development and at the same time receive moral lessons from our staff as well as from various resource persons. We also pay equal importance to games and sports. Students are divided into four houses namely Thumi, Trisong, Amshu & Everest and the various literary, creativity activities, games and sports are competed among these four houses.

  1. Games & Sports: All tracks and field events, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Throw-ball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Handball and many more.
  2. Culture: Dance, Music, Song, Play, Skit, etc.
  3. Literary/Creativity: quiz, spelling, handwriting, essay, debate, reading, elocution, drawing & painting etc.
  4. Computer: Computer Science, internet, typing etc.
  5. A glimpse from Silver Jubilee Celebration
Outdoor: Educational Excursion for senior students.
  6. Other activities: Nature/Environmental Studies.

Considering the pettiness of the ground which we still use as the playground cum assembly ground, the school has bought a playground big enough for our students seeking some financial aids with addition from the school itself.
